Mercury Fillings
We have stopped using old style mercury (amalgam) fillings in our office long time ago.
There are
several reasons for this. The science published in the dental
literature is not univocal on the damage the mercury does to
your body.
On the other hand most European countries and Canada have banned these filling either totally or for children and pregnant/breast feeding mothers.
This put aside, I have experienced another aspect of these fillings on myself: many years ago, having one of these fillings in my mouth, my tooth broke. Not the filling, which was still there, but my tooth! This was an eye opening experience, which I would have rather missed in my life.
These fillings do not strengthen the tooth; they rather weaken it by acting as a wedge inside your tooth. There is seldom a week passing by, where I have not seen one of my patients coming in with a broken tooth and the filling still in place.
We have posted some of the photos with partially or totally broken teeth due to an old amalgam filling on this website, and if you think it is gross, you are right! In today's age to rely on an over 150 year old technology in medicine, is not smart. If you want to replace some of your old fillings, we recommend Onlays or Inlays.
