Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Encino, CA

Sadly early on in my career, I have learned that not too many people enjoy going to the dentist. It’s rather that most patients exhibit some form of apprehension, or even anxiety. This led to my journey of finding a relief for these patients. Being it with hypnosis, through medications, or the newest brain research.

At Encino Smile Design, we’re proud to provide a range of sedation dentistry options. Sedation dentistry is an excellent choice for those with a fear of dental work, as well as for those who need to have extensive work performed.

From the lowest to highest level of sedation, here are your choices:

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a blend of nitrogen and oxygen that is inhaled through a mask over the nose. Your dentist can adjust the precise blend as needed to keep you calm and relaxed throughout your procedure. You will remain awake and responsive, but may feel light-headed, tingly, or heavy. If you start to feel uncomfortable with the sensations, you can simply remove the mask at any time. Nitrous oxide wears off in just a few minutes after removing the mask, allowing you to drive home safely.

Conscious Oral Sedation

Conscious oral sedation means taking a pill before your procedure to help you relax. Although you will remain responsive, you may feel noticeably drugged. You might fall asleep in the dental chair, but you will be easy to rouse. Conscious oral sedation takes several hours to fully wear off, so you must bring someone with you to drive you home after your procedure. Plan to take the rest of the day off to relax.

IV Sedation

For IV sedation, the dentist will insert an IV into your arm to provide relaxing medications throughout your procedure. You will not be fully unconscious, but may enter a sort of “twilight sleep” in which you are deeply relaxed and somewhat unaware of exactly what is happening. IV sedation often leads to prolonged sleepiness, so you must have someone drive you home. If possible, ask that person to stay with you for the rest of the day, as you may have trouble staying alert enough to take care of the basic tasks of daily living. Do not drive until at least the next day.

NuCalm

NuCalm is an innovative approach that helps people with anxieties. Originally developed for service men with the PTSD, it puts you into a meditative state without using drugs, but influencing your brainwaves. You will be able to drive home afterwards on your own. You can learn more about it on their website. It’s our primary choice to treat anxious patients and the response has been excellent.
